It's May and this is the time when most photographers start thinking about their Americana themed photo shoots. These fun shoots almost always have a few things in common; cut-off's, tank tops, sunnies, and of course, a flag or flag themed clothes.

Here is a list of a few other things you might consider when planning your Americana-themed photo-shoot:

Sparklers or Pop Confetti
Silly String
Smoke Bombs
Hats or Bandanas
Vintage Cars

Once you have your items and your client, the most important thing is to have fun! Create a narrative and work with that, but don't feel like you need to stick to the script. After you have some solid shots toss out what you know and go with the flow. Don't be afraid of stretching yourself. After all, you should always be trying to grow your skills and push yourself in a new and creative way.
For example, in the images above we shot in the mid-day sun, something that many photographers stress over and don't like to do because they are afraid of harsh shadows and unflattering light. That being said, I love shooting in the midday sun. You can get very creative angles and it's a great way to learn how to read the light. If you are one of the many photographers that hate shooting in the middle of the day consider that truth that you are missing out on valuable time that you could be shooting and limiting your work day. This means you could be missing out on income (and nobody wants that).

So to recap, make a plan, have fun and shoot on!
